Anode Microstructure Analysis
FOR ALUMINUM AND ZINC ANODES

A request was made by MPE Lindung Sdn Bhd for a microstructural analysis on MPE III anodes samples. Five samples were submitted and identified as 1A. 2B, 3A, 4A and SA. The objective was to determine microstructurally whether the samples had experienced intergranular corrosion.

TEST PROCEDURE / METHODOLOGY

The samples were sectioned across their diameter, ground and polished for the microstructural analysis using a metallurgical optical microscope (Figures 1 to 10) according to ASTM E3-9S. The specimen was etched and examined at magnifications up to 1000X.

TEST RESULTS

Photomicrographs of the microstructure are shown in Appendix A (Figures 1 to 10). The results of the microstructure are tabulated as follows:

1A Microstructural examination showed NO intergranular corrosion.
2B Microstructural examination showed NO intergranular corrosion.
3A Microstructural examination showed NO intergranular corrosion.
4A Microstructural examination showed NO intergranular corrosion.
SA Microstructural examination showed NO intergranular corrosion.
